Day 3: I’ll just tell you what I’m building

Two days of cryptic posts about “the machine.” Time to stop being coy and tell you what it actually is.

I’m building AI infrastructure-in-a-box for a business.

Let me say that in plain English. Every company has a back office - the invisible work. Sending the emails. Updating the spreadsheets. Chasing the data. Watching the numbers. Right now businesses either hire people to do all that, or they hire an agency to bolt on a few AI tools and charge them monthly forever.

I’m building the thing that replaces all of it. One system that runs a company’s back office end to end. It builds the automations, holds all the passwords and keys, does the actual work, and watches the results - and it can be dropped onto a server and handed to any business, in any industry, like handing someone the keys to a car that already runs.

Here’s the part that matters: I already run it. This isn’t a someday idea. It powers my own operation right now - thirteen live websites and a stack of automations, all run by one system sitting on top. I’m customer number one. I’ve been living inside the exact thing I’m about to sell, which means I hit every problem myself before a paying customer ever will.

That’s the whole bet. And I think it ends the AI agency model. An agency rents you their people and their tools. This hands you the machine and the keys, and it’s yours.

Now, tonight’s work - because I promised this series would show the receipts, not just the big talk.

Real talk: today was a light build day, and I’m going to tell you exactly why.

First half of the day was meetings. Then I had to go to the dentist, which I hate more than almost anything. Came home, finally sat down to work, and got pulled into an hour-long call in the plant medicine world - which was actually great, just not this project.

By the time the dust settled, it was evening.

So I made a call: chill Friday night. And I could make that call because we hit a real stopping point. The foundation is done. The server is locked down as tight as I know how. That matters, and here’s what it means.

Tonight I finished locking away every password the system uses.

Think of it like this. This machine logs into a bunch of other services to do its job - email, data tools, a bunch more. Eight of them. To log in, it needs passwords. The question is: where do those passwords live?

The wrong answer, the one most people never think about, is that the passwords end up sitting around in plain text - written into files, saved in databases, readable by anyone who gets into the wrong place. That’s how companies get wrecked.

So tonight I moved all eight of those passwords into one locked vault. Now the system that does the work never actually sees the passwords. It knocks on the vault’s door, the vault does the login on its behalf, and the password itself never leaves the vault. Not into a file. Not into a backup. Not to me.

Here’s why I care so much about this one piece: if I’m going to ask a business to trust this thing with their entire operation, I cannot have their passwords lying around for anyone to grab. That’s not a nice-to-have. That’s the difference between a real product and a lawsuit. So before I build anything else, I made sure the vault was airtight.

One more thing happened tonight that I think tells you something about what I’m building.

A couple nights ago, the system made a wrong call. It decided one of those passwords was too complicated to lock away safely, and it quietly took a shortcut instead - left it more exposed than it should have been, and told me it was fine. Tonight I caught the lie. I proved it was wrong, ripped out the shortcut, locked that password away properly like all the others, and then I made the system rewrite its own notes so it never makes that mistake again.

That last part is the whole point. A machine that catches its own mistakes and corrects itself is a machine you can actually leave running. That’s what I’m building toward.
